“In this space, people truly see and recognize each other, and share their talents and commitment. These are the acts of love that make this space bright.”

BAKE-FINAL-03Community Leader: Lisa Moore, Rhizome Cafe

Photographer: Melissa Baker

A rhizome is a horizontal root system common among plants like lilies and orchids. Running parallel to the ground's surface, the plant root sends shoots and stems up, creating what look like many separate plants. Similarly, the space within Rhizome Cafe is a point of intersection where a diverse group of individuals are all connected through a system that's not immediately apparent.

The daytime dishwasher may  be the voice behind the influential poetry reading at the evening arts show, while the graphic designer may also volunteer their spare time as a youth facilitator. In any given week, workshops are facilitated, meetings are held, and events are hosted – from a queer elders' event to a fundraiser for a migrant justice group.

The many contributions people make at Rhizome are what keep our community bright. People share words and creative expression that they feel unable to put forward elsewhere; the common thread connecting each gathering is a commitment to social justice.

On the night of the photo shoot, 40 people ranging from 4-70 years old gathered to support the shoot. Each person had a story to share about their link to the Rhizome community. By the end of the shoot, new connections had been made: people were laughing and openly expressing their shared love for this special place.
